Afars and the Issas, French Territory of the
Size--8,880 sq. mi. (23,000 sq. km.). Population--180,000.
A desert land of nomads and traders located on the east coast of Africa where the Gulf of Aden meets the Red Sea, the territory has no rivers except after rain. About 85% of the people belong to the Issa (Somali) or Afar (Danakil) tribes, both of which are Muslim and have a caste system. Men treat women as property. The neighboring Republic of Somalia is constantly striving for a "Greater Somalia"--trying to annex territories, to unite the peoples of the Somali races.
