The 70% of the population that lives in villages scattered through the mountain or desert countryside is too remote from urban centers to have much part in the urban economy. In the past 2 decades, Afghanistan has received a total of $1.5 billion in military and economic aid from the Soviet Union; $425 million from the U.S.; and $72 million from China.
Afghanistan is known for its high-quality hashish, particularly in Mazar-e-Shariff and Kandaar.
