Location--On the west coast of the Balkan peninsula, bordered by Yugoslavia on the north and east, by Greece on the southeast, and by the Adriatic and Ionian seas on the west.
How Created--Slavic invasions following the 5th century drove the ancient Illyrians (the Albanians' ancestors) southward from the large portion of Yugoslavia they had inhabited. They then settled in the largely mountainous region which is their present home. Independence was achieved following W.W.I.
Size--11,100 sq. mi. (28,748 sq. km.).
Population--2,400,000: Albanian, 95.2%; Greek, 2.4%; Gypsy, Macedonian, Romanian, and others, 2.4%. 69% Muslim, 21% Greek Orthodox, 10% Roman Catholic.
Who Rules--The people's Assembly, which is elected every 4 years and meets twice a year.
Who REALLY Rules--The leadership of the Albania Worker's party controls the entire functions of government. It is the only political party. Enver Hoxha, a former French teacher who led the National Liberation Movement in W.W.II, has been the guiding force since independence.
