Size--5,382 sq. mi. (13,939 sq. km.). Population--215,000.
The Bahamas are a chain of nearly 700 islands (30 are inhabited) in the northern Caribbean Sea. Between 1492 and 1508 Spanish raiders enslaved about 40,000 native Indians and shipped them to Haiti to work in the mines; by 1530 the Bahamas were uninhabited. The islands became a nesting place for Blackbeard and other pirates, but by the early 18th century the pirates had been driven out by the English Navy whose motto was "Expel the pirates and restore commerce." A member of the British Commonwealth, the Bahamas gained full independence in July, 1973. The current Prime Minister and most of the Parliament are black, as are 85% of the people. Tourism is the major industry.
