Barbados: Location, History, Size, Population, & Government
About Barbados, information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
Size--166 sq. mi. (430 sq. km.). Population--275,000.
The easternmost Caribbean island, Barbados was under uninterrupted British control from 1627 until its independence in 1966. In fact, British influence over the island is still considerable as evidenced by the continuing presence of a British governor-general. Barbados is a classic case of a one-crop economy. In 1970, sugar provided about 80% of the island's foreign exchange and the foreign-owned sugar companies wield much social, economic, and political power. About 89% of the population is black.
