About the Little League World Series baseball tournament held in 1974, history of the youth sports event and the games.

1974--28TH LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES

Playing in methodical fashion, the Far East Leaguers from Kao Hsiung rolled over all opposition to claim Taiwan's 4th straight World Series flag before more than 30,000 fans attending the annual classic. Victim of the Kao Hsiung onslaught was Red Bluff, Calif., 12-1.

The victory also gave Taiwan all 3 Little League world titles this year. Earlier, Taiwan captured the Senior Little League title at Gary, Ind., and the Big League title at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The hard-hitting Taiwanese rapped out a total of 13 hits including 4 homers as they scored 5 runs in the 1st, one in the 2nd, one in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th, and 3 in the 5th.

Key man for the champions was Lin Wen-Hsiung, who had 2 home runs and 2 singles for the day's work. He struck out 15 men, gave up 2 hits and walked one.

The only bright spot for the California Little Leaguers was a home run shot by Greg Shoff in the 5th inning.

All the games involving the Far Eastern team were beamed back to Taiwan via 3 television networks. This meant the Taiwanese followers back home were watching the game at 3 A.M.

The consolation game was won by Maracaibo, Venezuela, 2-0 over Tallmadge, O.

The Series was capped off with the usual 3-day Washington, D.C., tour. A special treat developed when newly named President Gerald R. Ford met the entire Little League group in the White House and spent some 23 minutes with them for pictures and conversation.

Other contenders in Series play were teams from New Haven, Conn.; Athens, Greece; Esquimalt, British Columbia, Canada; and Jackson, Tenn.

Following the 1974 tournament, non-U.S. teams were banned from further competition in the Little League "World" Series because officials declared that the Taiwanese put too much emphasis on baseball, thus taking the fun out of the sport.
