About Belize, information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
Belize (formerly British Honduras)
Size--8,866 sq. mi. (22,963 sq. km.). Population--140,000.
Occupying the southeast corner of the Yucatan peninsula in Central America, Belize is the site of several Mayan ceremonial cities which were abandoned for unknown reasons centuries before the arrival of Europeans. The British took formal possession of the area in 1862 and, although the colony is now internally self-governing, Britain still retains control of defense and foreign affairs and receives half of all exports. The colony has been promised independence, but increasing border problems with Guatemala have caused a delay. Belizeans fear that to receive independence without settling the border dispute will invite Guatemalan occupation.
