MAXIM GORKI (1868-1936)
His Person: Russian novelist and playwright. He was born into the lower classes, the son of an upholsterer. Picked junk from the city dumps to earn his keep as a child. Enjoyed sudden literary fame and success after years of anonymity and poverty. Devoted almost all of his considerable literary income to the revolutionary movement, in which he was a leading figure. Awarded the prized Order of Lenin. Wrote: The Lower Depths.
His Belief: "This 'search for God' business must be forbidden for a time--it is a perfectly useless occupation."
