MOTHER THEODORE GUERIN (1798-1856)
Cause. She entered a convent in France, and was busy teaching mathematics when an appeal came from the Bishop of Vincennes, Ind., for missionaries.
Upon her arrival, she opened an academy for girls, the 1st in Indiana. She also established the motherhouse for her new order, the Sisters of Providence of St. Mary's-of-the-Woods, as well as setting up 10 other schools.
Devil's Advocate. There has been no verification of her "heroic virtue" and no onset of miracles.
Nomination. Her cause was introduced in 1940 by Bishop Francis S. Chaland.
Present Stage. The latest word is that her writings have been declared to be "without defect in faith or morals." The consensus is that she will soon be declared "Venerable."
