Biography of Saint Anthony Mary Claret
About Saint Anthony Mary Claret, history and biography of the Cuban archbishop.
ST. ANTHONY MARY CLARET (1807-1870)
Cause. One of Spain's most popular preachers, he founded a congregation of preachers called the Sons of the Immaculate Heart. As Archbishop of Santiago, Cuba, he reformed the seminary and clergy there. He made extensive visitations to the outlying districts, curtailing the widespread concubinage and illegitimacy.
Believing that favorable material conditions were essential for a good Christian family life, he introduced sound farming methods and credit unions to the poor. He later returned to Spain as Queen Isabella's confessor, and while there founded societies to publish and distribute free Catholic literature.
Devil's Advocate. St. Anthony Mary Claret may have been a true Christian. However, unlike many of his contemporaries who desired to remain missionaries, he accepted the highly visible and political post as Queen Isabella's confessor.
Nomination. He was beatified by Pius XI on February 25, 1934.
Present Stage. He was declared a Saint by Pius XII on May 7, 1950.
