Biography of Saints St. Andre Grasset de Saint-Sauveur

About the saint St. Andre Grasset de Saint-Sauveur, biography and history, causes and current status.

Cause. A secular priest and one of the Martyrs of Paris, a group of 191 men massacred in various Parisian prisons during the French Revolution. Born in Canada, he moved to France and was soon imprisoned by one of the antireligious cliques for refusal to support by oath the Civil Constitutions of the Clergy.

Devil's Advocate. It has to be decided whether the Paris Martyrs died for purely political reasons or for their refusal to submit to the civil authorities because it meant surrendering their religious independence.

Nomination. St. Andre Grasset de Saint-Sauveur and his 190 contemporaries were canonized by Pope Pius XI on October 17, 1926.

Present Stage. Although he died in France, St. Andre Grasset was the 1st Canadian (martyr or nonmartyr) to be declared a Saint.
