Size--222,000 sq. mi. (569,797 sq. km.). Population--690,000.
A landlocked country in southern Africa, Botswana was known as the British Protectorate of Bechuanaland until it was granted independence as a republic within the Commonwealth in 1966. One of Africa's poorest nations, Botswana is linked, if not indentured, to South Africa. When at home and not in South Africa, 90% of the labor force works on small cattle and dairy farms. But about 25% of the working population comprises Botswana's most important export--manpower for South African mines.
