Cape Verde Islands
Size--1,557 sq. mi. (4,033 sq. km.). Population--275,000.
The Cape Verde Islands are an archipelago of 10 islands and 5 islets west of Senegal in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. Most of the population is of mixed African and Portuguese descent. African influence can be seen in the use of calabashes, the mortar and pestle, the practice of carrying loads on the head, the use of drums, and the existence of polygamy. Portuguese influence is evident in cropping techniques, terraced gardens, mode of dress, the use of the grinder, methods of house building, and the use of bagpipes and triangles in music. About 99% of the people are Roman Catholic.
