Size--864 sq. mi. (2,236 sq. km.). Population--300,000.
This small group of islands is located about halfway between Madagascar and the southeastern coast of Africa. In December, 1974, the predominantly Muslim inhabitants of the islands voted to break away from France and become an independent nation. The President, Ahmed Abdallah, boasts that he is unable to read or write. However, this has not prevented him from becoming known as one of the 10 richest men in the Indian Ocean area.
