About the Cyprus, information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
Size--3,572 sq. mi. (9,251 sq. km.). Population--680,000.
The 3rd largest island in the Mediterranean, Cyprus is located in that sea's extreme eastern corner, south of Turkey and west of Syria. This strategic location has made Cyprus a prime target for every European and Asian invader since the Egyptians. Cyprus gained independence from Britain in 1960 and has been trying to steady itself between the Greek majority (77%) and Turkish minority (18%) ever since. The latest clash occurred in July, 1974, when the Cypriot National Guard, led by army officers from Greece, took over the Government in an attempt to force union with Greece. Turkish forces invaded Cyprus and widespread fighting broke out. By the end of the year, Turkey controlled the northern 40% of Cyprus which was well on the road to becoming a partitioned island.
