In 1940, Nazi troops invaded Denmark and occupied that nation for 5 years. Danish citizens displayed exceptional bravery during the Nazi occupation. Danish Jews were protected from the Nazis and helped to escape from German-occupied territory. In 1944, Danish workers called a general strike and refused to be coerced into returning to work by Nazi ultimatums. It was not until after the Germans eased restrictions on Danish citizens that Danish workers returned to their jobs.

Denmark has pioneered in the field of socialized medicine. All students under the age of 16 get free medical and dental care. Medical payments for people over 16 are based upon earnings with the State absorbing remaining costs.
