A panel of thinkers responses to questions about their utopian society, in this case what the economic distribution would be like.
The Almanac's Exclusive Symposium on Utopia
How would work and goods be divided?
FULLER: Naturally, since cooperation and efficient technology will have replaced competition and low-yield production, there will be enough wealth and goods for all to have a high standard of living. Since automation will have eliminated a good many jobs, especially the unpleasant ones, work will no longer be a drudgery or a necessity. Everyone will spend most of his time doing what interests him, and in this way the interests of a few will supply the world's technology.
HALL: According to one's abilities and one's needs.
JOHNSTON: By straw and wishbone. Or: Just enough.
KITT: According to need not greed--reward those with greater incentive by allowing those persons who create work for others to pay less taxes. No one should have to pay more than 5% taxes. Food should be measured out so no one gets more than he needs. This would eliminate greed and fat people. Respected doctors would decide the proper amounts.
LENNON: Color of eyes.
SPOCK: Wages would be much more equal than now. People would select their own work.
WALLACE: All necessary goods and services--from basic foods and housing and clothes to medical help--would be state-owned or people-controlled. Private enterprise could exist only for luxuries and extras. Everyone would be educated or trained for some kind of occupation of his choice, and everyone would work a minimum amount of time. There would also be a minimum guaranteed wage for every living adult, and a maximum set on what anyone could earn and keep.
WALLECHINSKY: An office, factory, farm, or store would be run by a general assembly of all workers who would decide policy and elect managers and administrators, who would be recallable at any time. Each establishment would send delegates to industry-wide regional assemblies in order to coordinate production and distribution.
