El Salvador: Random Facts and Trivia

Some random facts and trivia for the country of the world El Salvador, the Soccer War or World Soccer Cup, guerilla fighters.

EL SALVADOR

NOTES

Although called the Soccer War, the World Soccer Cup competition was only a spark to the long-smoldering tensions between El Salvador and Honduras that erupted into a 5-day war in 1969. Large-scale migration from crowded El Salvador to relatively empty Honduras, plus economic discrimination against Honduras via the Central American Common Market (CACM), were important contributing factors. At least 2,000 died on both sides, and the economies of both countries are still feeling the effects.

Leftist guerrilla groups continue to operate in El Salvador, despite government efforts to suppress them. Shortly after his inauguration, President Arturo Molina carried out a "purge" of the National University in San Salvador, claiming that it had "fallen into the hands of communists." The rector and the governing council of the university were arrested, along with about 50 students. Thirty-seven foreign professors were asked to leave the country. The university has long been a leftist intellectual center.
