Location-Near the extreme eastern bulge of Central Africa. The Sudan forms its western boundary, the Red Sea its northern, and Kenya its southern boundary. To its east are the Somali Republic and the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas.

How Created-As the ancient Abyssinian Empire, Ethiopia dates from biblical times. The recent monarchy traced its origin to the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon. Conquered by Italy in 1936 and liberated 5 years later, Ethiopia added the former colony of Eritrea in 1952 and made it a province in 1962.

Size-471,800 sq. mi. (1,221,900 sq. km.), about as big as France and Spain combined.

Population-27 million: Galla, 33%; Amhara, 25%; Tigre, 12%; Walamo, 8%; Somali, 6%; Gurage, 4%; Afar-Saho, 3%; Sidamo, 3%; other, 6%. 55% Coptic Christian, 35% Muslim, 10% Animist.

Who Rules-The Provisional Military Administrative Council which deposed Emperor Haile Selassie in 1974.

Who REALLY Rules-The military is supported by student groups and sometimes by the Coptic Church.
