Famous Suicides Captain Lawrence Oates

About the famous British explorer Captain Oates, biography and history of the suicide.

CAPTAIN LAWRENCE OATES (1880-1912)

Life: British explorer Lawrence Oates was a member of an expedition into the Antarctic which was led by Captain R. F. Scott in 1910. The South Pole was successfully reached in 1912, but it was on the return trip that Oates committed what most historians refer to as a "heroic" suicide.

Death: Bad weather, lack of food, and sickness delayed the expedition during its return trip. Oates's feet froze and he became partly crippled. Believing that his condition would weaken the chance of survival for the others, he deliberately left the shelter one night and walked to his death in a sub-zero Antarctic blizzard.
