About Gibraltar, information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
Size--2.25 sq. mi. (5.8 sq. km.). Population--30,000.
Gibraltar is a rocky, steep-sided peninsula connected to Spain by a sandy isthmus. It has been a British Colony since 1713, but Spain has been appealing to the UN and fighting for decolonization since 1964. In ancient times the rock was known as one of the Pillars of Hercules which marked the limits of the known world. (The other pillar was on the African coast.) Gibraltar has the only colony of monkeys living wild in Europe. They live all over the rock and are a main tourist attraction.
