2nd Opening Game

BERRA'S SINGLE IN 7TH GIVES 1961 N.Y.

YANKEES 9-8 WIN OVER 1929 PHILADELPHIA A'S

COMPUTER PARK--Yogi Berra's lone hit, a 2-run single in the 7th inning, earned the 1961 New York Yankees an uphill 9-8 victory over the 1929 Philadelphia Athletics in the 2nd game of the computerized tournament.

Berra's game-winning blow was one of a total of 26 hits made by the power-laden line-ups of the Yankees and Athletics. This surprising barrage of base hits was put together by the computer at the expense of 2 of the game's quality pitchers, the Yankees' Whitey Ford and the Athletics' Lefty Grove. It included no less than 5 home runs. Clete Boyer hit 2, and Mickey Mantle and Elston Howard one each for the Yankees. Jimmy Dykes, the 3rd baseman for the A's, belted a grand slam in the 3rd inning to move Philadelphia out front, 5-1.

The Yankees got those 4 runs back in the 4th on Max Bishop's error, Elston Howard's double, Bill Skowron's single and Boyer's home run. Both teams then pecked away in more moderate fashion with the A's leading, 8-7, until Yogi singled home the winning runs in the 7th after the Yankees had loaded the bases on Roger Maris's walk and 2 Philadelphia errors.

As usual, Clyde the Computer didn't dally. It took him just 15 seconds to spew out the complete 9-innings, play-by-play, once the necessary statistics were ingested.
