Founded in 1957 "to educate the American public about the nuclear-arms race, disarmament, and the military budget and to encourage citizen participation in national policy matters affecting war and peace issues." Publishes newsletter Sane World plus numerous pamphlets and reports. Annual dues are $15 per person, $5 for senior citizens, $3 for students. Encourages active member participation in community activities. Past recipients of Sane's annual Eleanor Roosevelt Peace Award have been George McGovern, Eugene McCarthy, Dr. Benjamin Spock, Daniel Ellsberg, and Andrei Sakharov. Offers, for sale, a 30-minute slide show entitled "Guns or Butter? Uncle Sam's Military Tapeworm," narrated by Paul Newman. 25,000 members.

Believes that "the individual taxpayer who does not care to participate in organized religion. . . should not be forced to endure an additional tax burden through any programming, planning, or legislation by members of the governing bodies, either local, State, or national." Claims that the "Federal Government under various programs of assistance is spending $26 million a day in direct cash grants for religious purposes and that this does not count the money they receive indirectly by being free from all taxation." Membership is $12 per year. Publishes a monthly newsletter plus various pamphlets and reports. One of the original founders of SOS is Madalyn Murray O'Hair, whose efforts resulted in the Supreme Court decision to remove Bible reading and prayer recitation from the public schools. 35,000 members, 16 State organizations.

. . . Founded in 1948 "to defend and maintain religious liberty in the U.S. by the dissemination of knowledge concerning the constitutional principle of separation of church and state." Membership cost is $10 per year. Publishes a periodical, Church and State. Holds many regional and State meetings and one national meeting every year. Members have included former Sen. Sam J. Ervin and Bishop Edward C. Carroll. 100,000 members, 10 chapters.
