. . . Founded in 1941 as "an informal organization of students and followers of the life and writings of Henry David Thoreau." Publishes quarterly, Thoreau Society Bulletin, which tells of the activities of members, prints unpublished Thoreau writings, tells of Thoreau's significance today, and includes reprints of rare Thoreauviana. Sponsors annual convention on the Saturday nearest July 12, in Concord, Mass. Membership is $2 per year or $50 for life membership. 1,000 members.

. . . Founded in 1963, "to investigate and perpetuate the history and memory of the R.M.S. Titanic and its sister ships, Olympic and Britannic." Cost for joining is $7 per year, and members receive a membership certificate and card plus 4 issues of the publication, Titanic Commutator. Researches the possibility of salvaging the lost liner and is involved with reprinting Titanic books published in 1912. Members include survivors of the Titanic. 450 members.

. . . Founded in 1972. Dedicated to "a better world through humor," and strives to "upgrade the cultural levels of conversation." States that turtlism is "basically sticking your neck out, having fun a lot, promoting friendship, and all the while keeping clean thoughts." Is a charitable organization which donates all proceeds to hospitals for crippled children and homes for mentally retarded children. As the Earl of Turtledom says, "A Turtle is a person who knows that a sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to our steps as we walk the tightrope of life." Lifetime membership is $1. Sponsors a variety of special events during "International Turtle Awareness Week." Offers a number of official turtle accessories for sale: flying turtle pins, bumper stickers, jacket patches, turtle power T-shirts, and a 45 rpm record of the turtle song as recorded by "ole" lonesome George Gobel. Members have included Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, Howard Hughes, Johnny Carson, and 50 astronauts. There are more than 5 million card-carrying Turtles in the world today.
