Guyana: Location, History, Size, Population, & Government
About guyana information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
Size--83,000 sq. mi. (214,970 sq. km.). Population--850,000.
Located on the northeast coast of South America, Guyana was known as British Guiana until it received independence in 1966. The population is 51% East Indian, 30.7% African, 11.4% mixed, 4.4% Amerindian and 2.5% Portuguese, Chinese, and others. Considerable friction has developed between blacks and East Indians. For example, the Administration of Prime Minister Forbes Burnham, a black, has stressed cooperatives in all economic sectors, but East Indians, who are frequently self-employed, do not feel they need this sort of assistance. The blacks, who have a lower birth rate, are slowly being outnumbered. A powerful force in Guyana are the foreign corporations which own and operate the country's major industries, bauxite and sugar. However, Burnham is moving toward nationalization and hopes to establish closer ties to Africa and other Caribbean producers of bauxite.
