Hungary: Random Facts and Trivia

Some random facts and trivia for the country of the world Hungary, Hungarian history and Russia.

The key event of recent Hungarian history is, without question, the nationwide uprising of 1956 in which the people of Hungary demanded worker management of factories, a government consisting of representatives of the trade unions and the youth, withdrawal of all Russian troops, and numerous other radical changes. This was too much for the Soviet Government in Moscow who sent in 6,000 tanks and tens of thousands of troops to put down the revolution and reestablish their own brand of communism. Two hundred thousand Hungarians fled their homeland.

Since that time, the Soviet-approved Hungarian Government has gone to great lengths to please the people on a material level. Rather than institute a super-repressive regime, they chosen to allow more private property, more "verbal" criticism of the bureaucracy, and they have even allowed Hungarians to travel abroad freely. However, there are still 100,000 Soviet troops stationed inside Hungarian borders.
