Information about Grains: Introduction

About grains their variety and uses, production, history, where they are located in the world, rice, cereals, wheat and more

All over the world cereals such as wheat, rice, corn, oats, barley, rye, and millet feed billions of people. Raising grains is the largest industry in the world, and bread made from grains is the most widely used food. The different grains and their varieties grow under different conditions, locations, and climates (there is a wheat harvest happening each month of the year someplace in the world). Grains have been greatly affected by modern technology, and improved methods of transportation have allowed grains to be shipped to areas which cannot grow them. However, commercial milling and processing techniques often strip the grains of their nutritional content. In their natural state grains are an important source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. There is much to be learned yet about the various grains and their value to humans and animals, though it has been established that it is important to vary the grains in one's diet.
