Information about Vegetables: Shallot

About shallot, information about the vegetable, production, history and varieties in the world.

In looks, it resembles a small onion, except that it is divided into 2 or more cloves, like garlic. Most shallots which we see in the markets are imported, although until about 20 years ago, Louisiana produced millions of pounds. The shallot is slightly milder in taste than the onion. Store your shallots in the refrigerator in a sealed plastic bag; they should be kept cool and dry.
