JORDAN

NOTES

In the 1967 Arab-Israeli War, Jordan witnessed the loss of Jerusalem and the entire west bank to Israel. In the aftermath of that defeat, the Palestinian Resistance began to take the lead from the defeated Arab Governments in the fight against Israel and for Palestinian national rights. Hussein was clearly one of the main agents in the denial of those rights to the Palestinians, so the Resistance moved to gain control of Jordan. This challenge resulted in a full-scale war (a civil war) in Jordan, in which Hussein and his bedouin Army defeated the Palestinian Resistance with U.S. weapons and support. Hussein in the process napalmed and strafed Palestinian refugee camps, killing and maiming thousands of civilians. Since that time, the King has been an object of increasing hatred among large numbers of Palestinians living in Jordan. He has responded with a continuing heavy policing of Palestinian camps in an extremely repressive atmosphere.
