1646 A.D. (The Taj Mahal). The "most beautifully perfect building in the world" is a phrase accorded to the Taj Mahal by all who visit it. Built in 1646 by Shah Jahan, the 5th Emperor of the Mogul Dynasty, in memory of his recently deceased wife Mumtaz-i-Mahal, the Taj Mahal was constructed by artisans gathered from all over the world. For 17 years, 20,000 or more workers labored over one of the most beautiful shrines known to man. The Taj Mahal is made of gleaming white marble, which rests on an 8-sided platform of red sandstone measuring 130' long on each side. A slender minaret 133' high stands at each corner of the platform. The building itself is 186' square, and is topped by a shining white dome 70' in diameter and 120' high.
