Size--115 sq. mi. (298 sq. km.). Population--130,000.
A chain of at least 1,087 coral islands 400 mi. southwest of India's southern tip, Maldives became a republic in 1968 after being ruled by sultans for centuries. However, the present President had been Prime Minister under the last Sultan and political and economic power is still concentrated among a few families. A Muslim country, legal punishments include lashings with a leather strap for adultery and banishment to uninhabited islands for theft. There are no banks, no bars, and no taxes. There is, however, malaria which has kept away all but a few foreigners.
