Martinique: Location, History, Size, Population, & Government
About Martinique, information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
Size--431 sq. mi. (1,116 sq. km.). Population--360,000.
One of the Windward Islands in the Caribbean, Martinique was continuously involved in the conflict between France and Britain, participating in some 20 wars in its history. Martinique has also suffered some sort of natural disaster on the average of every 4 1/2 years. Hurricanes and earthquakes are not uncommon, but the most dramatic catastrophe was the May, 1902, explosion of Mount Pelee, the island's active volcano. Ash and lava buried the city of St. Pierre, killing nearly all 30,000 inhabitants. One of the few who survived was a prisoner who was protected by the thick walls of his cell. Martinique is an Overseas Department of France, theoretically equal with Departments in France, but many islanders believe that the French Government is unwilling or unable to deal with the problems of poverty and unemployment.
