The Most and Least Drinkers. "The freest alcohol drinkers are the white population of South Africa, with 2.05 U.S. gallons of proof alcohol per person per year, and the most abstemious are the people of Belgium with 1/8 of a U.S. gallon per person. It was estimated in 1969 that 13% of all males between 20 and 55 years of age in France were suffering from alcoholism. In the U.S. in 1972, consumption of distilled spirits reached an all-time high of 1.9 gallons per person, due, it is said, to increased usage of gin and vodka."
