Nauru: Location, History, Size, Population, & Government
About Nauru, information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
Size--8 sq. mi. (21 sq. km.). Population--8,000.
An oval island in the Central Pacific, just south of the equator and about 1,300 mi. northeast of Australia, Nauru is composed largely of phosphate-rich guano or, as it is better known, bird droppings. This unusual resource has provided Nauruans with one of the highest per capita incomes in the world and has allowed them to build a 51-story skyscraper in Melbourne, the Australian city's tallest building. They also own a 1st-class-only airline and a large and growing shipping line. The only problem is that by 1990 Nauru will be an empty hulk and uninhabitable. But the people of Nauru have several options open to them including buying another island.
