How Created-Nepal was founded in 1769 as a kingdom consisting of 46 previously sovereign principalities.
Size-54,362 sq. mi. (140,798 sq. km.), about the size of Wisconsin.
Population-12,750,000: Nepali (Gurkha, Khasi, and others), 51.1%; Tharu, 13.8%; Bihari, 10.7%; Tamang, 6.1%; Newar, 4.8%; Magar, 3.3%; Kiranti, 2.9%; other, 7.3%. 90% Hindu, 9% Buddhist, 1% other.
Who Rules-The King, currently Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, rules with the help of members selected by him from Parliament. Parliament cannot question the conduct of the King and the King can overrule Parliament on any issue. King Birendra studied under Dr. Henry Kissinger at Harvard.
Who REALLY Rules-India has in the past exerted tremendous cultural and political influence over Nepal. India's cultural ties with Nepal's Hindu population are centuries old. During the past decade, however, Nepal has managed to free itself somewhat from India's orbit and has initiated trade agreements with China, and receives aid from both the U.S. and the U.S.S.R.
