Oman, a sultanate in southeastern Arabia, has the dubious distinction of being one of the most repressive nations in the world. Until 1970 it was ruled by Said bin Taimur who banned alcohol, tobacco, drums, movies, and travel. Without his permission, no one could build a new house, repair an old one, or cultivate new land. In 1970 he was overthrown by his son Qabus bin Said who has made slight changes. However, he is basically a puppet controlled by the British who also control the military. Most of the western province of Dhofar is now controlled by a liberation movement and fighting continues in the interior.
