Origin of Famous Inventions and Inventors: Machine Gun or Gatling Gun

About the origin of the invention of the machine gun or Gatling gun, history of how inventor Richard J. Gatling devised the device during the Civil War.

THE INVENTION: Machine Gun (1861)

THE INVENTOR: Richard J. Gatling, U.S.

When the Civil War broke out, Gatling was quick to see that an advantage would go to the North (which had his allegiance even though he'd been born in North Carolina) if its forces had a revolving battery weapon capable of rapid fire. He put 4 years into the effort before he succeeded, too late for the weapon to be of effective use in the fast-fading War between the States.
