The X ray was discovered by accident. Roentgen, a German physicist, began tracking down the X ray in 1893 during his experiments with a Crookes tube. Invented by the British physicist Sir William Crookes, the tube produced streams of electrons, called cathode rays. Before going to lunch one day, Roentgen put the activated tube on a book. He failed to notice the book contained a key and rested on photographic film. When he later developed the film, he discovered the image of the key. He had accidentally taken the 1st X ray.
