Feeling guilty about not having given Bette Davis the Oscar the previous year, the membership now gave it to her for a lesser picture called Dangerous. Even Davis thought it was a consolation gesture and that Katharine Hepburn should have won. Davis, ever the iconoclast, upset the social crowd by coming to the posh formal event in an informal checkered dress.
