Died: April 15, 1865, the morning after the was shot in the head while attending a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. Lincoln was 56 years old. He was the 1st of 4 American Presidents to be assassinated. He was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, where his body remains at rest, despite the efforts of a pair of thieves to break into the tomb in 1876, steal Lincoln's remains, and hold them for $200,000 ransom. The plot was uncovered by a Pinkerton detective, and the grave robbers were caught red-handed, tried, and sentenced to a year in prison.
