Born: May 29, 1917, in Brookline, Mass. Brookline is an unpretentious suburb of Boston, and the gray frame house in which he spent his childhood was located in a middle-class neighborhood. The fabulous wealth for which his family is celebrated came only in later years. Kennedy was the 1st President born in the 20th century.

Died: November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Tex., from bullet wounds in the neck and head. Kennedy was riding in a downtown motorcade when he was cut down by a sniper. The identity of the sniper-and other details of the assassination-are still a matter of controversy. Kennedy, who was 46, lived a shorter life than any other President. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, beneath a memorial "eternal flame," As E.B. White observed: "He died of exposure, but in a way that he would have settled for-in the line of duty, and with his friends and enemies all around, supporting him and shooting at him."
