Born: January 9, 1913, in the small frame house adjoining his father's lemon grove in Yorba Linda, Calif. He was named after King Richard the Lion-Hearted--3 of Hannah Nixon's 5 sons were named after English kings. When he was growing up, the nickname "Dick" was never used; as his mother recalled, "I always called him Richard, and he always called me Mother."

Died: April 24, 1994, in a New York City hospital four days after suffering a stroke. His two daughters Tricia and Julie were at his side. His wife Pat had died the previous year. He was buried in his home state of California next to his wife.
