Qatar is an oil-rich peninsula extending 90 mi. into the Persian Gulf from the Arabian peninsula. It is ruled by Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad al-Thani and the other male members of the extended al-Thani family. Qatar, which achieved independence from Britain in 1971, is a religiously-oriented state like Saudi Arabia and the school curricula reflect this orientation. Arabic language and religious education (Islamic) combine to account for up to 50% (and at least 1/3) of class time at all levels through secondary school.
