San Marino: Location, History, Size, Population, & Government
About San Marino, information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
Size--23.5 sq. mi. (61 sq. km.). Population--21,500.
The oldest republic in the world, San Marino is situated on the slopes and summit of Mount Titano in north-central Italy. Tourism and postage stamps provide 80% of the Gross National Product. Whenever the nation needs money, it prints a new stamp for philatelists. San Marino receives $1 million a year from Italy in return for an agreement not to run a gambling casino, TV or radio stations, duty-free shops, or sell imported cigarettes. San Marino has always taken risks to help the oppressed-hiding the Duke of Urbino from the Borgias, hiding Giuseppe Garibaldi from Austria in 1849 and then helping him escape to America. In 1921, it hid refugees from Mussolini, and in 1938 fugitives from Nazi-conquered Austria. It offered help to Jews persecuted by Hitler and became a haven for Italian partisans near the end of W.W. II.
