About Sao Tome and Principe, information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
Sao Tome and Principe
Size--372 sq. mi. (964 sq. km.). Population--69,000.
This archipelago about 125 mi. off the west coast of Africa in the Gulf of Guinea was 1st colonized by the Portuguese in 1471. Slavery was abolished in 1869, but the abolition of slavery actually worsened the status of blacks. As a slave, the native was bought like a head of cattle or any other possession, but, since he represented a certain investment of capital, his owner treated him in such a way that he kept in good health. As a wage laborer, the native was no longer purchased. Instead he was hired by the Government and if he became sick, he was simply fired and replaced. The main product of Sao Tome and Principe is cocoa. Over 500 years of Portuguese rule ended when independence was declared on July 12, 1975.
