--1938. Out of the Silent Planet, by the great British scholar C. S. Lewis, began a trilogy of what might be called Christian science fiction books. The "silent planet" was our own earth (silent because it had fallen from Divine Grace and no longer spoke with the Voice of God), but the planet visited was Mars: a Mars that may have lacked canals but did have water, vegetation, intelligent life, and lots of stimuli for philosophical-theological speculation.
