Seychelles: Location, History, Size, Population, & Government
About Seychelles, information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
Size--107 sq. mi. (278 sq. km.). Population--60,000.
Mostly used as a resting place for pirates until the mid-18th century, these 85 islands in the Indian Ocean, 1,000 mi. east of Kenya, were captured by the British in 1794. The Seychelles are still a British Colony. Some of the most exotic flora and fauna in the world exist there. Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond novels, used to tell his friends: "Get there before the American millionaires take over." British land developers seem to have taken his advice, having recently built modern hotels and golf courses in the Seychelles. Meanwhile, poverty is widespread due to a high birth rate and a lack of employment.
