Throughout the course of American history there have been political, regional, religious groups who have suffered defeat or persecution, yet were determined not to abandon their beliefs or old way of life. These people sought a better future than the one that awaited them in the U.S. They felt that by escaping the boundaries of their homeland they could find freedom and perhaps perpetuate their past traditions and customs in a foreign land. This is a brief record of some Americans who fled the traumas of U.S. history, and settled in another land. This is also a record of what happened to their children's children, their successors and descendants living in today's world. In short, the history book comes alive in the following accounts of these touchingly human expatriates.
