Swaziland: Location, History, Size, Population, & Government
About the Swaziland, information, history size, location, population, people, culture, and government.
Size--6,704 sq. mi. (17,384 sq. km.). Population--500,000.
A small, oval-shaped land in Africa's southeastern corner, Swaziland gained independence from Britain in 1968. In 1973, King Sobhuza II, who has been head of the Swazi nation since 1921, scrapped the British-style constitution and decided to rule without one. Swaziland is almost entirely surrounded by South Africa and the Royal Swazi Hotel Casino makes a lot of money from staid South African white men who have to cross the border to gamble and cavort with black women. Families in Swaziland are extended. Upon marriage, for example, a new bride receives a child from someone in her husband's family. The bride assumes all parental responsibilities for the child in order to prepare her for having her own, at which time she gives back the surrogate child.
