Location-Northwestern Europe along the estuaries of the Rhine, Meuse, and Schelde rivers. Borders with Germany on the east, Belgium on the south, and the North Sea on the west and north.
How Created-The Low Countries-Holland, Belgium, and Flanders-were a Germanic fragment of the Middle Kingdom formed after the death of Charlemagne in 814. They were passed among the European powers-Burgundy, Spain, and France-until 1815, when the Congress of Vienna created the Kingdom of The Netherlands. Modern Netherlands was formed when the Belgians revolted in 1830 and formed a separate state.
Size-15,892 sq. mi. (41,160 sq. km.).
Population-13,750,000: Dutch, 98.4%; German, Belgian, and other, 1.6%. 40.4% Roman Catholic, 28.3% Dutch Reformed, 18.3% no religion, 9.3% Reformed Church, 0.6% Lutheran, 3.1% other.
